4 SYMPTOMS OF A BAD ABS MODULE

purpose

Before we dive in, it’s important to note that some people call the ABS Module an electronic brake module, a controller antilock brake module, or an electronic brake control module.

The ABS Module is basically the brain of the ABS system. It processes data from the brake switch and wheel speed sensors to determine when to cycle the solenoid valves inside the hydraulic control unit for brake fluid pulsations to each wheel. This helps prevent your wheels from locking up when braking. It also reduces skidding and braking distance to give the driver better steering wheel control.

Location

The location will typically be on the hydraulic control unit but can vary between cars. In some situations, it could be in the passenger compartment or the trunk of the car.

symptoms

warning lights - a symptom of a bad abs module

warning lights

The first symptom of a bad ABS module is warning lights. A faulty module might turn on an ABS, engine, or brake light. In some situations, it may also turn on the traction control. If you want to read the codes related to a bad ABS system, you’ll need an OBD2 scanner. You can get one here.

disabled abs system - a symptom of a bad abs module

disabled abs system

The second symptom of a bad ABS module is a disabled ABS system. If the module is malfunctioning, it’s actually smart enough to disable the ABS system.

brakes locking up - a symptom of a bad abs module

brakes locking up

This leads to the next symptom - the brakes locking up. Since the module disabled the ABS system, it won’t be able to pulsate the brakes when braking hard, resulting in the brakes locking up.

engine compartment fire - a symptom of a bad abs module

engine compartment fire

The last symptom of a bad ABS module is an engine compartment fire. According to the national highway traffic safety administration in 2022, Hyundai had a recall of over 300,000 vehicles having a defective ABS module. They stated that the ABS module could have an internal short that result in an engine compartment fire. If you have any of these vehicles call your dealership to see if you qualify for a free replacement:

  • Hyundai/Santa Fe/2016 - 2018

  • Hyundai/Santa Fe Sport/2017-2018

  • Hyundai/Santa Fe XL/2019

  • Hyundai/Tucson/2014 - 2015

If you concluded that your ABS module needs to be replaced and you want to do it yourself, I would recommend getting a repair manual here. You can use code “AD10VA” for 15% off one-year subscriptions for any US Order.

You can also buy a new ABS module here.
