4 SYMPTOMS OF A BAD CV AXLE

The purpose of the cv axle is to transfer power from the engine to the wheels, allow the wheels to flex when turning left and right, and also move up and down for suspension purposes.

location

The location of the cv axle will be right behind the tires underneath the strut.

The symptoms depend on which part of the CV axle is affected. In this article, we’ll discuss both.

symptoms

clunking noise - a symptom of a bad cx axle

clunking noise

The first symptom you might experience with your car is hearing a clunking noise when accelerating. In some situations, you might hear it when braking hard. This usually happens when the inner cv joint is defective, however, this isn’t as common though.

clicking noise - a symptom of a bad cx axle

clicking noise

The second symptom of a bad cv axle is hearing a clicking noise when driving and turning at the same time. Depending on the way you turn, you can tell which CV axle is affected. If you turn left and hear the clicking noise but not when turning right then its probably the cv axle on the left side of the car. This usually happens when the outer cv joint is faulty.

leaking cx axle boot - a symptom of a bad cv axle

leaking cv axle boot

The third symptom of a bad cv axle is a leaking cv axle boot. You’ll usually find grease spilled on the inner portion of the tires, suspension parts, and on the ground. When this happens, dirt, moisture, and debris enter the damaged portion of the boot and prevent it from working properly. In some situations, if you don’t hear clicking noises when turning and catch a tiny leak early on, you can just order the boot with grease and repair that portion to save some money from buying the whole thing.

vibratipns while driving - a symtpom of a bad cx axle

vibrations

The fourth symptom is vibration while driving. If you chose to ignore the symptoms over time the cv axle will get worse and start creating a vibration when driving. This is caused by internal damage of the cv joint.

If you concluded that your cv axle needs to be replaced and you want to do it yourself, I would recommend getting a repair manual here. You can use code “AD10VA” for 15% off one-year subscriptions for any US Order.

You can also buy a new cv axle here.
