SYMPTOMS OF A BAD ABS MODULE

In this article, we’re going to discuss symptoms, as well as the location and purpose of the ABS module. Some people also call it an electronic brake module (EBM), controller antilock brake module (CAB), or an electronic brake control module (EBC).

purpose

ABS stands for Anti-Lock braking system. So, what is an ABS module? In simple words, it's the '“brain” of the ABS.

The ABS module analyzes data from the brake switch and wheel speed sensors to determine when to cycle the solenoid valves inside the hydraulic control unit to deliver brake fluid to each wheel. This helps to keep your wheels from locking up as you brake. It also minimizes skidding and braking distance, giving the driver better control of the steering wheel.

LOCATION

The ABS module is typically found on the hydraulic control unit. However, it can differ between vehicles. In some cases, it could be in the car's passenger compartment or trunk.

symptoms

WARNING lightS

The first symptom of a bad ABS module is warning lights. A faulty module might turn on the ABS, engine, or brake lights. In some situations, the traction control light can also pop up. Ensure you can access your car's diagnostic codes by acquiring an OBD2 scanner here.

DISABLED ABS

The second symptom of a faulty anti-lock braking system module is a disabled ABS. If the module fails, it is smart enough to turn off the anti-lock braking system.

THE BRAKES LOCKING UP

The third system of a faulty ABS module is your vehicle’s brakes locking up. When the ABS module disables the anti-lock braking system, the brakes would be unable to pulsate when braking hard. As a result, the brakes will lock up.

engine compartment fire

The last symptom of a bad ABS module is an engine compartment fire. According to the national highway traffic safety administration in 2022, Hyundai recalled over 300,000 vehicles having a defective ABS module. They stated that the ABS module could have an internal short that could result in an engine compartment fire. If you have any of these vehicles:

  • Hyundai Santa Fe (2016-2018)

  • Hyundai Santa Fe Sport (2017 - 2018)

  • Hyundai Santa Fe XL (2019)

  • Hyundai Tuscon (2014-2015)

call your dealership to see if you qualify for a free replacement.

If you want to repair the ABS module yourself, I would recommend getting a repair manual here.
